If you are rolling with EZOIC, you are certainly interested in how you can actually boost your EPMV.
I mean, how could you not?
Because ultimately, a higher EPMV means more money for you.
And let’s be honest here: We use Ezoic to earn (more) money, right?
I have personally used EZOIC on several websites, and I would like to share my best tips & hacks on how to improve your EZOIC EPMV to make sure you are getting the most out of it.
Without further ado, let’s dive right in.
How to Increase Your Ezoic EPMV
To increase your Ezoic EPMV, try to get more US visitors, invest time in your placeholder setup, make extensive use of Ezoic Big Data Analytics, write longer content, increase the line height and font size of your content and increase the vertical height of your posts.
If you take care of all of these things, your EPMV and earnings will undoubtedly skyrocket!
Let us now go through all of these aspects, one by one, starting with US traffic!
Attract Traffic from Rich Countries (mainly the US)
There’s hardly a blog post I publish these days that does not mention this at least once (whenever I talk about blog monetization through ads!):
If you want to earn big with ads, you absolutely need traffic from the right places in the world. And the right places mainly means traffic from the US!
Most partners (advertisers) that are part of EZOIC operate primarily in the US market.
For you as a publisher, that simply means that if what you are publishing is not in direct relation with the US (= you don’t have much traffic from the US), this will result in a much lower EPMV for you.
I could probably dedicate a whole blog post to just that topic. But for now, you simply need to believe me.
Let’s say you have 100,000 page views per month.
Now, if all of these pageviews have been generated from traffic from the US, then you could earn a pretty good amount of money with that.
How much this would be would, then, mainly depend on your niche. But let’s say you are in a profitable niche and get 100,000 pageviews a month (all the traffic from the US); then you could definitely earn a couple of thousand dollars per month.
Now, if those 100,000 pageviews have all been generated from traffic from the Philippines, chances are that you would still be earning pennies every month.
That’s just how brutal this game is.
Traffic matters, but what matters even more is where this traffic actually comes from.
But the beautiful thing about all of this is that as a blogger, you can actually get that US traffic (which is nothing else than money in the bank) regardless of where you are located.
Yes, you heard right. It doesn’t matter if you are in Switzerland, Spain, South Africa or on the North Pole.
Why it doesn’t matter?
Because all that matters is the content that you are publishing, so, to put it simply: You would just need to make sure that what you are writing about is of interest to people in the US.
Now, to do just that, there are obviously some obstacles that you need to overcome.
For instance, if you are native language is not English, you would still need to make sure to write your blog in English, as you will hardly be able to reach a lot of US people if you write your blog in French, German, or Swahili.
And yes, this can be done.
Take me, for example. I am from Switzerland, and my English is far from perfect.
Yet, I have succeded in creating several blogs in English.
Are they perfect? No.
Do people still read my content? Absolutely!
Okay, great. But you must be living in the US, then?
No. I am actually living in Switzerland. And I have never even been to the States!
Invest Time in your Ezoic Ad Placeholder Setup
Once you get approved by Ezoic, it is time for you to set up your ads.
I would call this process semi-automatic, as Ezoic is indeed willing to lend you a helping hand if needed, but the big chunk of the ad setup has to be done by you (manually!).
Note: This did change a bit now. Most of the setup is now (2023 and beyond) automatic. However, it is still advisable to optimize the ad placeholder setup to maximize profit!
So how is it done?
You can install these azoic ads on your website in a couple of ways.
The first method is by using the Ezoic Google Chrome Extension.
By using this extension, you can place ad placeholders on your website in the positions where you would like ads to show later on.
Setting up ads like this is not easy. This is why I created a nice little tutorial for you guys to show you how it’s done.
Yet another way to do the ad setup is by using the plugin Ad Inserter. This will only work if you are on WordPress, though.
Setting up Ezoic ads with Ad Inserter is very easy. And this plugin truly works like a charm.
I recommend using Ad Inserter rather than the Ezoic Google Chrome Extension, which is buggy at times.
Whatever you might use to get these ads on your website, you will want to make sure that you get the setup right.
Okay, great. So what does that mean?
It means you must ensure you have placeholders in the right places, in all the right sizes.
Also, you absolutely need to make sure that these placeholders are properly setup for (on) mobile devices as well.
One easy way to check whether your placeholders show properly on mobile devices is to use the Google Chrome Inspector.
To do so, right-click with your mouse, then choose “Inspector.”
There, you can easily preview your website in different formats:
Iphone 5, Iphone 6, Iphone 7, Samsung Devices, iPad, iPad Pro, etc.
Just choose the desired screen size from the top menu.
Now, verify if these placeholders show up properly and also verify if all the right sizes are set.
Sometimes, placeholders too big will show on mobile and tablet devices.
Whenever this is the case, you will need to make sure to remove the sizes that cause problems from your placeholder.
Another way to check if your setup is working properly is to open up an incognito window in your Google Chrome browser and see if all the real ads show in the right spots and sizes.
When working in the Google Chrome Extension, ensure you are not logged into your (WordPress) site. You need to be logged out to set & adjust the placeholders via this extension.
A perfect ad setup is crucial because this will drastically boost your EPMV.
You need to give EZOIC lots of placeholders to work with so that they can find the best combinations for you (remember that Ezoic is AI-based software!).
It is, therefore, best to set up as many placeholders as possible. Ezoic is pretty smart and will make sure to only show ads in places where it makes sense (= makes sense financially).
The more placeholders you set up, the more good combinations Ezoic can find.
Use Ezoic Big Data Analytics to Find High-EPMV-Topics
This hack is actually very easy yet so powerful.
Once you are on EZOIC, you can access Ezoic’s own Big Data Analytics.
Just head over to your Ezoic Dashboard, and from there, choose “Analytics” from the Top Toolbar.
Now, here’s where the magic begins.
As an Ezoic customer and with the help of Big Data Analytics, you can easily see which of your posts & articles perform the best in terms of ad revenue.
The magic metric to look for in Ezoic’s BDA is called EPMV.
EPMV is the amount of money you earn (through ads, obviously!) per 1000 visitors.
Now, for all of your posts, Ezoic automatically calculates your EPMV.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is where things start to get really interesting.
Let’s say you have a blog on languages.
On this blog, you publish different kinds of articles: “Interviews with language enthusiasts,” “How to learn language XYZ,” “reviews about language software,” and so on and so forth.
The true beauty of Ezoic Big Data Analytics is that you can very easily find out which kind of posts are the most lucrative for you.
You can either just sort all landing pages for EPMV (the post that gets you the highest EPMV will then be displayed first) or you can also sort the EPMV by category.
With this simple hack, you will see at once which kinds of posts really fill your pockets and which don’t.
Maybe you will see something like this here:
Interview Posts: Average EPMV of 7 Dollars
How to Learn Language XYZ Posts: Average EPMV of 10 Dollars
Review Posts: Average EPMV of 15 Dollars
With this kind of data, it will be very easy for you to decide on new topics for new articles.
In our case, we would probably focus much more on review posts, as they bring us almost double the amount of money than interview posts.
You will need a certain amount of articles and a certain amount of traffic to be sure that your data is fairly accurate, though.
If your article just got 50 page views so far, it might be that your EPMV shows an absurdly high number.
The general rule of thumb here is that you would want to have about 500-1000 organic pageviews on a certain post before you actually base any decision on this kind of data.
Also, you should have a couple of articles in each category (for the same reason!).
This kind of data is very valuable, and most of the time, bloggers don’t want to make this kind of data public, which makes it even more valuable.
Write Long(er) Content
This might sound somewhat counterintuitive. But longer content performs better. Really.
The reasons why longer content actually performs better, both in terms of rankings and also in terms of ads, are actually pretty straightforward.
First of all, Google would like to give people the best user experience possible.
And translated to our question of content length, this means that Google would like us publishers to answer questions in a complete manner, rather than just giving an incomplete answer to a question.
As far as ads go, it also makes a lot of sense that longer content actually performs better because longer content simply means that you can put more ads in your article.
And more ads usually result in more ad revenue. Not always, but most of the time.
Another benefit of writing longer content is that you will actually rank for many many different (additional) keywords.
Often, you will rank for keywords that you didn’t even target in the first place and these “unintentional” keywords sometimes bring in tons of traffic.
I like to think about it this way: Longer content is almost always better as long as you can stay on-topic.
Always try to answer the original topic (question) in a complete way that does not leave any questions unanswered.
Now, the art of successful blogging is to actually stay on-topic when writing a blog post. Say everything that needs to be said without saying things that are not directly related to the subject matter.
This might seem pretty easy to you but this is actually where most bloggers fail miserably.
Increase the Line Height of your Content
We have already discussed a couple of hacks so far. And some of these aren’t exactly easy to execute (put into practice).
This one, however, increasing the line height of your content is actually pretty easy.
If you are on WordPress, chances are that you can do that directly in the backend (dashboard) of your theme. You might find this under “Theme options” or something like “Typography.“
Or, it could very well be that you () have a field for Custom CSS. If that’s the case, you must enter a couple of code lines to complete this.
The code to change the line height that you would need to add is the following:
body { line-height : 1.7; }
I like to have this at about 1.7. You could also go a bit lower or higher. For best results, you should definitely not go under 1.5, though.
Increase the Font Size of your Content
Another incredible, easy hack that can have a huge impact on your earnings. It’s almost too easy, really.
Just increase the overall font size of your content, and you will earn more. It’s that easy.
But why do I earn more then?
Because increased font size will mean increased vertical height, and that, ladies and gentlemen, is nothing else than more money in the bank.
Please read on to learn more about the magic of “vertical height.”
Now, to increase the font size, many themes will let you change these directly from within the theme settings.
If you can’t find it there, you can also just simply add it in the CSS stylesheet (or maybe your theme has a field for Custom CSS, then you can just enter it there).
The code you would need to add is:
body { font-size : 20px; }
This will simply change the font size of your main content. As you are increasing your main content, you would also want to increase the size of your headings (h1, h2, h3, etc.).
To do so, simply add the following code:
h1 { font-size : 36px; }
h2 { font-size :26px; }
h3 { font-size : 23px; }
And so on and so forth.
Increase the Vertical Height of your Posts
The longer your blog post will be, the better it will perform in terms of ad revenue.
But that does not only mean that you should write longer blog posts.
In fact, there are other, often easier ways to make your content longer.
Here are some great ways to further increase the vertical height of your blog post:
- Implement more pictures into your content
- Use infographics
- Maybe add some (pull) quotes
- Add a video to the content
- Add any visual element that makes the content longer, basically
All of these things will make your content longer.
And, of course, the hacks we applied earlier (increasing the line height and the font size) also contribute to our blog post’s vertical height.
And as we have seen previously, longer content (resulting in increased vertical height of your blog post) will mean that more ads fit into the article, which ultimately means that you will earn more money.
Increase Ezoic EPMV Hacks: Final Thoughts
If you do apply these seven hacks as outlined in this article, your EPMV is very likely to increase (a lot!).
Some of these hacks will only take you a couple of minutes to put into practice.
Others, like properly setting up your Ezoic placeholders, need some time but are very worth your efforts.
By the way, when setting up those placeholders, you can always reach out to the Ezoic staff (at some point, you will get your own Ezoic account manager) and they can help you with the setup as well.
I highly encourage you to do that.
